Mark Sutter, our Chief Strategy Officer at The Halo Group, let us pick his brain (and gave us his best advice for clients)

Q. How did you get into this business?
A. My dad was a “Mad Man.”

Q. If you didn’t work in the marketing world, what would you be doing?
A. Creating other experiences.

Q. Why did you decide to go into marketing/PR/creative/etc?
A. When Account Planning emerged in the late 90’s, so did I.

Q. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
A. I draw and paint. Not well though. Which is probably why you don’t know.

Q. What’s one thing you have to keep stocked in your fridge?
A. Perrier. I have no idea why. I rarely drink it.

Q. What excites you?
A. The journey. The destination is gravy.

Q. What’s your weirdest habit, superstition etc.?
A. Left shoulder salt shaker toss. So stupid, but it’s that Last Supper superstition I think. Parochial school upbringing.

Q. Have you ever lived outside of the US?
A. 15 countries. Just not for more than a week.

Q. What’s your favorite sports team?
A. Jets. Jets. Jets.

Q. What’s one thing you can’t live without?
A. A good maduro cigar. Thinking time.

Q. What’s your favorite book?
A.  Cold War spy novels. Currently reading Mission to Paris, Alan Furst. Love walking through past worlds.

Q. What was your first job?
A. Washing cars.

Q. Do you have a secret talent?
A. Teriyaki steak.

Q. What’s your favorite song?
A. “One Way Out” (The Allman Brothers Band, Live At The Fillmore East, 1971)

Q. Where did you go to school?
A. Stonehill College, North Easton, MA

Q. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
A. I grew up in Manhattan.

Q. If you could have one superpower, what would you choose?
A. X-ray vision. I’m a strategist. What’d you expect.

Q. What are you into right now?
A. Culturally authentic cooking.

Q. What advice do you have for a client when working with their agency?
A. Tell them everything. Good and bad.

Q. Why would a client love you or maybe just want to work with you?
A. Always give them something valuable that they didn’t expect.

Q. Is there anything special happening in your life you’d like to share?
A. 25th wedding anniversary. Just not sure what day it is.
